McLaren MCL33

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

That's not an opening in the photo. It's the trailing edge of the mounting pylon. Look to the right and you'll see the second one. Piola's depiction seems legit to me.

We'll be doing a set of articles on the McLaren nose cone given the complexities in place. Part 1 will soon be finished: Regulatory Framework.

Stay tuned:

The outlet at the bottom looks different in this photo,

That is an outlet, but it's also an optical illusion, in that it's not a triangular hole.

It's the mounting pylon. The trailing edges extend past the neutral section.

I could very well be wrong (nobody really has seen how the outlets look like), but my guess is that the side holes exit underneath the middle hole. I believe there's not enough room to neatly place them on one line and keeping the whole ordeal legal.

I am assuming here that the middle hole is the same solution as Red Bull. A straight hole filled with specifically placed vanes:

However, I do think they used a different solution for the side holes. The reason is because the solution with the vanes will basically be limiting flow through your duct. You don't have a lot of options for a middle hole, but you can produce NACA ducts for the side ducts to evade reg. 3.4.1 as there is the space for it:
Image

So the middle hole is more than like to go straight, while the sideholes have to go inwards and either upwards or downwards to get a full clear on the cross sectional rule. Again I can be wrong, but to me that forces a solution like this:

More will be explained in the coming article.

Scarbs video:
He shows the vortex associated with the cape. The cape is solid from side to side is it not? If so then that graphic is nonsense. Yes a vortex may be shed at the trailing edge - but that requires different air speed above & beneath the cape. I don't see what is creating a difference in air speed.
To me it looks like the cape feeds the air directly onto the snow plow. It is leading as much air as possible onto the snow plow. The snow plow has a big curled bit to create a big vortex to do the job Scarbs talks about.

looks like something of a ride height sensor near the trailing edge of the cape?
