Leclerc will unravel vettel if he is quicker than the German in qualifying. I don't see Vettel keeping a cool head if Leclerc has more qualifying pace. Ferrari should back whoever finished lap 1 a head. Vettel's experience doesn't count for much given that he has choked the past 2 years, so better to the team has strict rules of engagement but don't back anyone at this point.
I know Vettel will be the better driver, but that's only if he feels the team is behind him 100% and if he feels he has LeClerc covered. This is why i think we will have fire works this year. More fireworks than when vettel faced ricciardo at redbull. It will be Webber and Vettel all over, only this time vettel will be the webber.
Guess we are expecting too much from Leclerc. this is just testing.

I doubt that. Leclerc had aot of problems connecting his best sectors in one fast lap. Vettel was the best in that last year IIRC. There was an article about those stats. I think they will do fine. I hope that Ferrari learned from last season.

Not saying all those stats are wrong but is it not possible that the reason he didn't get perfect sectors because he was managing the car to get the most out of the tyres for example. Saving sector 1 to get more from sector 3. Could be part of the issue doesn't Lewis seem to be miles away sometimes and yet when he crosses the line he makes it up in the last few corners

The first bold part - did anybody think about that last year's car could have been harder to drive? That he needed to put much more driver input to stay at par with Mercedes?

Second bold part - it was quite a bit ago, he was just a very young man...

Imo, all you have to do is look at some of his radio comments form last year to see nothing has changed.

off the top of my head,
  • In Germany he complained because he was behind his teammate during race.
  • In Monza he was unhappy because he ended up P2 because he towed Kimi instead of the other way around
  • His many comments after incidents with other drivers
Vettel is amazing when things go his way, but when they don't or he thinks they don't he tends to fall apart.

Be vocal isn't falling apart... Only slip he did (yet major) was when he hits Lewis car...

Germany: He was behind Kimi who was on different strategy and was holding him up.
Monza: He was in the fight for championship, Kimi was not. It is only logical to expect your team to help you as much as they can, especially when you know that your only rival has his team 100% behind him.
As for comments after incidents: I think it is safe to say that all of the drivers most of the time think that it was the other guys fault.

TBF all of them when they are fighting to the top are crying when things don't go their way. Hamilton also complains when he is at the back. Everybody cries when things go wrong. Hamilton, Verstappen, Vettel...

And the only one who people like to hear complain is... Kimi.

A very nice interview to Mattia Binotto.

https://www.corriere.it/sport/formula-1 ... 377f.shtml

Here is an extract, with translation, that may shed some light on the shortcomings of the 2018 campain:

Q: È possibile parlare di un punto di forza della SF90?

A: «Ha una stabilità aerodinamica importante, è prevedibile e costante a medie e alte velocità, con il vento laterale, in curva e nei rettilinei. È un elemento che abbiamo ricercato perché era una delle difficoltà della vettura della scorsa stagione».

Q: Is it possible to talk about a strength of the SF90?

A: "It has an important aerodynamic stability, it is predictable and constant at medium and high speed, with side winds, while cornering and on the straights. It is something we have been working on (searched/researched) because it was one of the difficulties (weak point) on last season's car ".

Q: Quali erano i problemi fra lei e Maurizio Arrivabene?

Q: What were the problems between you and Maurizio Arrivabene?

A: "Working here for 25 years I've been lucky enough to live glorious moments with Todt, Brawn and Schumacher. And later with Stefano Domenicali. I have always learned from everyone, also from Maurizio and I thank him for that. On a personal level our relationship has always been good. Never a fight. The differences involved the vision, the management of the group and of the race weekend. We had different points of view ".
