Little slower... Maybe they added some wing for better race pace...

Ok it wasn't the best qually, but its not that bad.
We expected to struggle a bit on such a front limited track.
But we are not far away. SAI in his last run, his last sector was almost 3 tenths down of his previous runs last sector.
He did mistakes on some of the final corners as he admitted. If he could match his previous run last sector, he would be 11th and very close to 10th.

The key will be how the car works the front tires on the race. If they can keep them switched on without problems or not. If they sacrificed some one lap pace, for better controlling the front tires tomorrow, i am ok with that.
but we don't know. We will see tomorrow.

So mclaren will suffer most of the season unless they find a solution for their front end?

I think they already have updates in the pipeline to solve front-end grip issues. Probable ETA Barcelona. Regardless, Baku should be much stronger given track characteristics.

I think most of us not getting over-excited were expecting that here - the midfield is only a few tenths spread and this track is pretty unique for those front heavy tightening radius corners that go right from high to low speed in a single corner, the first one with the switchback is very hard on the front tyres and temperatures.
You can't even sacrifice some rear end to get the front better here because the stop go hairpins are followed by long straights where a lot of time is, so you daren't compromise on rear traction.
Should be better early on in the race with heavy fuel on board though.

Depend on reliability and look for the breaks. Points are still likely, but they will have to wait for them to come rather than chasing them

Start on softs or mediums tomorrow?
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Is it possible that the car was faster and they just messed up the setup? I mean, they lost 0.4 sec from Fp2 to Fp3
while they should be gaining...

Bottas: Fp2 1:33.3 --> Fp3 1:32.8 --> Q3 1:31.5

Hulkenberg: Fp2: 1:34.0 --> Fp3 1:33.9 --> Q3 1:32.9

Sainz: Fp2 1:34.1 --> Fp3 1:34.5 --> Q2 1:33.5

How come Sainz was so quick in FP2? Was it genuine or did he catch a favourable slipstream or so? Even If genuine, we have seen today that getting a “perfect” lap together here is very, very hard, almost all the qualifiers in the top left several tenths on the table.

Maybe the setup favours race pace over qualy pace? But from interviews they seemed encouraged by the FP pace and then qualifying turned out to be the way they originally anticipated.

It is possible but if they were already dialed in for FP2 then cooler track temp from FP3 being earlier in the day would mean you'd be slower.
