I think it was a solid strategy from Red Bull today to do what they did. Gasly's race would've been too compromised if he had gone through to Q3. Now he has free choice of tyres. Also with people crashing into the barriers, it made sense to send Verstappen out early ahead of the pack to at least put in a lap ahead of anyone crashing. In the end, all those drivers who relied on tows to gain an advantage where at risk of getting their lap destroyed if anyone in front messed up.
Verstappen has driven well so far this weekend to stay out of trouble. He has probably learned from Monaco to leave margin when on a non-crucial lap and push when needed.
