McLaren MCL34

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

and more mainplane close to the ground for more df it seems, exactly like we speculated, we are not that bad
Mainplane is mostly the same but the flaps taper even more like Ferrari.

The car does look pretty awesome from the front now. It looks like this should in theory push them into a clear 4th spot. What I find a tad strange is that it has been noted that McLaren is front-limited and maybe lacks a bit of front downforce and therefore struggled more at China than they did at Bahrain (and to an extent Baku), much like Ferrari, and yet they have gone more towards Ferrari's FW concept, when many people are speculating Ferrari may adjust this due to the issues they have had in generating enough front downforce for low speed corners. Any thoughts on this?

from an aero point of view definitly, this must represent a significant! time gain if working

Maybe Ferrari is moving back to a different design. Who knows?
It just depends on the relative starting point too when you look at the numbers.

McLaren has made this fault in the past chasing the theoretical numbers and yes they may look great but it can make for a very difficult RACE car.

I am sure though that compared to the FW they have NOW the numbers look better and less front limiting. Secondly a Front Wing isn’t just sitting there in isolation. a) It HAS to work with the whole flow structure and b) how it presents the air to the bargeboards and around the tire

Tyres a more of a deciding factor according to Vettel. So their aero may not be all that bad but it's being limited by something else.

Any news on the PU front?
PhilipM mentioned that he heard the update that was expected for Barcelona has now been pushed to Canada, which is when teams usually launch their 2nd spec. He didn’t say the reason for the schedule change though.

So no reliability improvements for this weekend?

No idea, we'll have to wait and see... Don't know if they'll have any reliability updates that won't require any if the penalty related components changes, i.e changing the ICE, turbo, H or K
