McLaren MCL34

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Bargeboards don't look different in those photos. We have to wait for tomorrow to see both cars. I hope it wasn't just a PR rendering because those looked like some pretty nice updates.
Those photos also don't include the new shark fin, which we know is real because there are photos of the updated engine cover in the pit lane.
I didn't realize until just now: that's not Lyft's logo. What "Lyft" is this?
judging from its location i would say that its probably some new vape product to go with their BAT sponsors.

This picture from @tgruener shows the difference between the previous spec bargeboards and the new one... The new one seems way more finished and polished.

The area where the side pod deflectors and bargeboards connect is a hugely critical area.

This to me is a big upgrade for McLaren. Area circled in red.

Still quite underdeveloped in that area compared to top teams....it seem that ever since this rules were introduced, there is progress, but always a step behind Merc and co.(complexity wise)
Is that budget problem or lack of design idea? I would think budget.

all are behind merc in detailing, with this update mclaren has taken a big step with detail, what is crazy is mercs top speed with all these conditioners, their car is one big drag machine

My guess would be due to the fundamental flaw with last years chassis, their barge boards basically didn't get any development so they started this year on the back foot & likely wanted to start this year with a more basic concept to verify the concept. With budget they will still likely be behind the front runners in this area but one would assume they will close some of the gap this year (if the new bits work as planned)

Complexity doesn’t necessarily implies speed... A “simpler” design could be better for a given concept than a “complex” one... I would also argue that there is a lot of complexity in the current bargeboard area already.

This weekend will be interesting to show that too, a car like Haas seems to have a way more complex bargeboard area than Mclaren, will that make them faster?

Some solutions also add drag and given that Mclaren doesn’t have the most powerful engine in the grid, the trade off between drag and downforce could not be worth it (an example of this is the lack of an S-Duct in the MCL34 compared to the rest of the teams... There is a definite aero performance gain, but even when it is a “simple” addition to build into the car, the team considers that the drag trade off doesn’t make it worth it).

Finally, we also need to keep in mind that for some teams, they are working on evolutions of previous concepts, while for Mclaren the MCL34 is a new concept compared to previous year, which means that there is still a learning curve on the parts.

Renault have an upgraded internal combustion engine this weekend. F1 boss Cyril Abiteboul said they are "aiming to put on all four cars but this is going to be tight. More power, plus more reliable after what happened in Bahrain. Took a conservative approach on power in Baku."

Thank you....i still think budget allows teams like Mercedes to look at multiple concepts at the same time and thus developing faster.

Seems more simple than renders, maybe it’s the angle
The image hides the curvature of the parts behind the boomerang. It's a lot more sculptured than you can see there, I think.
