Step by step, the 4th place is linked to McLaren.

But we know it can change quickly, I expect Haas and Renault to bounce back and chase McLaren at some point
It’s indeed a tight midfield, I’m not counting out anybody. Toro Rosso look so quick right now, Racing Point usually always recover from shaky starts, Haas probably has the quickest baseline car. I’m also sure Renault will react, they want the car sorted for the French Grand Prix. My hope is McLaren will be able to develop the car continuously in the right direction. The car isn’t the quickest in the midfield, but maybe their pit wall, strategists will continue to stand out and make a difference.
I think HAAS had a car that could qualify better, but I'm not sure I'd say it is the quickest baseline, I really do think it is Mclaren that has the quickest midfield car now. Not always, but usually.

I also do think, and I know I'm repeating myself, but our updates haven't had the chance to work in anger yet given the nature of the two tracks used since the upgrade. My gut feeling is that this car is going to be very slippy in Canada and about good enough in the corners and very strong on the straights to push away from the midfield.

Time will tell and I may eat my words, but I think we will go on to trouble Red Bull in the race in Canada.

Canada should be a good track for Mclaren this year. im hoping for them to be best of rest with HaAS in very equal terms...

My expectations are a bit lower since I expected McLaren to have a better showing in Baku.

Been said that, in addition to the low Drag concept of the car, track temperatures haven’t played in the team’s advantage either... The low drag/downforce concept compounded by relatively low track temps could be affecting their ability to get the tires to there sweetspot... Looking at both Ferrari and Mclaren’s performance in Bahrain, the high track temperature and circuit layout (long straights) made both teams achieve their best performances so far... I mention Ferrari because it seems to be a team that follows a similar pattern to McLaren in regards to their track performance so far this season...

On the other side of the spectrum we have Mercedes and Haas, who seem to have suffered in the high temp tracks (probably overheating their tires)...

If the above is accurate and with the teams entering the “summer” portion of the season, it could make both team’s performances improve and knowing this, it isn’t strange that they would be sticking to their current concepts...

This could be a wild theory though!

The fact that the other midfield teams are within 4 points of one another is probably doing McLaren a favour. Their squabbling over the minor spaces has allowed for five 8th or better finishes in the last five races for McLaren which is what has opened up a healthy gap above the chasing pack. Sainz is on a nice little mini-streak of three good points finishes in a row now and Lando would be right with him if he could survive lap one without incident.

The next three tracks (Canada, France & Austria) all appear to be more suited to the car as well before the home race in Silverstone then Germany & Hungary which could be more challenging. I think on current form it’s very much feasible for McLaren to have matched (or even beaten) their entire 2018 tally by the summer break after Hungary - excellent progress thus far.

I wonder how the hotter temperatures of the summer months will affect the way the tires work.

So far those MCLs performs better at higher track temp and with additions of new upgraded PU, Mclaren will steadily progressing towards the top 3. Not sure about their performance during a rainy race though. But, I'm expected a better season compared to last year.

It's entirely possible, we do perform better in warmer weather.

Personally I was thinking of track layouts. Canada largely will suit us, as will Austria and Silverstone. Paul Ricard wont be too bad either I dont think.

With the S1 times that Sainz was able to.put in at Barca, ie 6th fastest, I feel optimism that the car will perform to a very high standard on tracks that suit it.

I'm looking forward to seeing how we get by in mid speed corners after the update, since low and high now seem.ok.

I definitely feel top 3 is out of reach this season, and maybe next. It’s an all out war in the midfield, there’s no clear cut 4th quickest team, we don’t have a buffer to anybody, apart from Williams. We may perform better at certain tracks than our rivals, but it’s going to keep going up and down, maybe till after the summer break. The kind of performance we need to find to match the top 3 is probably unprecedented in season. It’s not 2009, where we’re a Championship team that happened to get the new rules wrong, and are fighting back, supported by Mercedes Benz, Vodafone, etc. We’ve been a midfield team for a while now, trying to get back and finally on the right path. The guys ahead are outspending us on a crazy level and if we get close, their parent companies have the muscle to throw more money at their F1 teams. Following on Team Stream, Carlos engineer made a statement that I feel applies to our situation. After Carlos made his stop, he emerged not too far off from Pierre, his engineer told not to get distracted by being close to Pierre, noting we’re not racing him. It’s the same with the entire team. We’re not Racing Red Bull, or the top 3, we’re in an intense midfield battle, let’s not get distracted, we may get disappointed.
I’m banking on our development rate and revitalised pit crew and wall to take us to a solid 4th place.

I agree in that we will be seens as anything more than 4th fastest and by some distance, but I think on the right tracks we can be on Gasly and I hope in the hunt for Verstappen.

I dont think we will be able to challenge at the front until we can understand and replicate merc or RBs front wing performance, in that they have met or exceeded last years front downforce and outwash levels.

I haven’t seen any news yet, but that means fines for McLaren and Renault. Do need it in Canada?

The PU was upgraded in Barcelona and has been given green light for using max quali mode. Next one won't be anytime soon unless someone blows up an engine or it gets damaged in a crash where penalties are inevitable.

I thought this upgrade was just a fix like the Honda one, not "true" upgrade. My bad if I was wrong.

You were right the first time. But technically a new con rod design to fix reliability is still an upgrade. Now the car can use significantly more power unlike in China, Baku & Barcelona.

McLaren has a very big shot at securing 4th in constructors easily this year. I'm expecting upgrades throughout the season to keep clearing them easily. Let's hope it keeps going well cause the team deserved this after so many painful years.
