Easily? on what planet do you live in they are not faster than Str ,Renault will soon solve the problems in fact they should have been ahead of other midfielders in Monaco if they got the strategy right. Racing point and Alfa are still very much in this game it's tight in the Mf
Personally, I think McLaren's biggest edge on the midfield are their points.
Disagree, Carlos suffered some bad luck in first GPs, so points could be even more. I think McLaren biggest edge is reliability. They´ve been in the battle for points constantly, while most midfielders have been strong at some tracks, but weak at some others
I think their biggest edge is their pit wall. Even though they’ve not been a race winning outfit for a long while, I think they’ve got a more solid pit wall compared to the midfield, not to mention the team back at Woking on race day.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Just to jump on the bandwagon here... your both correct, but let’s not forget they’ve also been good on tyres & breaks again. That has been another contributing factor to their performance relative to some of their midfield competition

It's a good all round car. They are where they are because they have a good all round car I think. We have got points through luck, for sure, but we have lost points through luck also so it is not the answer.

We aren't the clear fourth fastest car at every track and our Qualification performances makes our car look a bit slower than what it is, but we are fast enough to push for 4th or 5th fastest in most races, which is why in most races we can get points.

The reason why I think their points is their biggest edge? They have, pretty much, double the points everyone below them have. They haven't been twice as good as them. That, double the point, doesn't reflect how close it is.

Double the points makes it sound larger than it is. The fact is that it’s 13 points and if a team gets 6th and 7th when we don’t score, then they will be ahead.

Agree about the pit wall and tire managment. We can say they´ve improved a lot on every aspect, now the question is if they´ll be able to continue improving at similar rate until matching the top cars

Anycase it´s nice to see they´re finally making solid progress

i agree. theyve been the most "complete" midfield team. and they seem to hold out some pace during practice, only to show up on race day. whereas TR and Haas look great until sunday, where they cant put it all together when it counts. if carlos would have finished all or most of the first races they would probably have a much bigger gap.
not saying its going to be easy, but making up big point spreads are going to be hard in the midfield unless someone starts having a lot of DNF's.

Same goes for Haas and STR, either of those teams could have been or can easily be 4th with a double points finish. Even Renault could have been much higher without their DNFs and they are actively talking about winning the midfield battle.

I presume that if Renault unleashes all their power in Paul Ricard that McLaren can too.

Abiteboul says next month's race at Paul Ricard has been singled out as the event where he wants the team's engine and car to unleash its full potential and help it pull clear of the midfield pack.

"We are committed by Paul Ricard to have all the problems and all the delays that have been hurting us at the start of the season sorted out," he explained.

"So what that means is the engine will be back at full power and even a bit more, and that should be available at Paul Ricard.

when was the last time a midfield team scored 6th and 7th ? you'd have to go back 7 years, not in the current formula. What does that make the odds 1 in 140 ?

Spa 2018, Force India finished 5th and 6th

"In Baku, low-speed wasn't a problem. It was only [in Spain]."

Maybe it was a balance/setup problem? Could they have answers for Canada?

I agree with what your saying, the points might make someone look at the table and think we are always fourth and not challenged and that's not true.
But I think we are consistently close with different teams, which is due to the car being useful almost everywhere, more so than other cars, and that is what I think the table does show. But 5 races in you can't yet really say it is that representative either yet.

I think/hope the next few races will underline the competitiveness of the car at different tracks and leave us with a bigger margin than we have now.

In Bahrain, they were no less, but there we saw a good performance of the team.
