So McLaren are using the Williams mirror idea?
Yeah, kinda. Mercedes and Red Bull also have mirrors like that.

Ferrari were the first to do that. Creates vortexes and reduces drag.

I would guess that this mirrors (the red bull Version ) are mainly to create a downwash, whereas the original ferrari Version does only lower the drag. But i don`t know why ferrari dropped it.

Their lack of downforce is caused by.....a lack of downforce development. They've openly said that they've been focusing on a low drag design and haven't add too much downforce.

So tracks like Monaco they struggle with the front end but on tracks like Baku they enjoy less drag so are good on the straights etc.

They've come out and said that they think they need to change focus and start adding downforce if they want to close the gap to the top 3.
That pertained to the rear wing. Front-end issues stem from tapered front wing and tyre warm-up issues.
Tapered front wing not generating enough downforce. Tyre warm up issues = lack of downforce, Ferrari have the same issue
That's not what Ferrari is saying. They are not lacking FE DF. Ferrari are having Tire temperature window issues not heatup problems.

That seems to relate to a lack of front end downforce as well cause that would help squeeze the tires in to the ground and generate more friction.

Yea wasn't referring to the fe df for Ferrari, just the tires.

If they were overheating the tires then there would be more thermal degradation which they don't seem to be suffering from do they?. So the problem must be in the other direction.

I'm not sure they reduce drag at all; if anything it adds onto it. The primary purpose is to create downwash towards the diffuser. Ferrari likely dropped it because they introduced a different mechanism that uses the cooling vent on the halo mounting and the mirror's support structure to achieve somewhat the same effect.

yep, don't know. To me "problems keeping the tires in the temperature window" means above and below.
