10 sec penalty for Kvyat.Darth-Piekus wrote: ↑27 Oct 2019, 22:57Remains to be seen.
How could they not? While knowing this track would be hard on the tyres? These guys are among the smartest in motorsports. It confuses me. It was vital to know how to get the hard tyres to work around here. Same for qualifying on softs yesterday, while it was clear it was the wrong tyre to start the race on. The team has made massive gains and they finally make me smile again this season (also today with Sainz & Norris being competitive on the first stint). But next season we’ll need less strategic mess ups and less horrible pitstops.SmallSoldier wrote: ↑27 Oct 2019, 22:13They didn’t try them... More likely a drop off in temp instead of over temp. The hard have a higher operating temp.Emag wrote: ↑28 Oct 2019, 20:58Carlos said that he lost all the grip in the rear after pushing to overtake Kvyat. The tires were not "destroyed" per se, but perhaps an increase in tire temperature killed their performance. He had a fight with Verstappen at that period as well and that broke him out of the "rythm" too, which lead to more temperature changes in the tires. After that he had no pace whatsoever, he kept sliding in every corner (this is what Carlos reported anyway). When he switched to mediums the pace was better, but still not what you would expect from McLaren after Friday and Saturday.
My only guess is that the car didn't react well to the track and ambient temperature changes in Mexcio. It was too sensitive having a very narrow sweet spot. I hope they thoroughly research the data to find any possible underlying causes for this strange car behavior. The car has been perfect with the tires this season, especially on the races. That's one of the reasons for their great performance and edge over the rest of the midfield rivals. To suddenly lose that at a race towards the end of the season, is definitely not good and very random. It's important for them to know exactly what happened so they can rectify it for next year.
As long as the team finds out the reason why they were so bad on the HARD tire I'm fine with the result, it was just a bad weekend, it happens from time to time
