Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

But seriously, what are those bangs? They weren't there last season. There were smooth growling noises, but nothing like this.

They were on mostly high power runs. Example Brazil quali lap.
And 2 other vids i captured from Singapore GP

Seems like they smoothed out the bangs, and to me all this seems like they're using more power to the engine on the overrun to battle that handbrake effect Max was describing when the ers is charging. (And maybe to spool up the turbo)
Still sounds cool af

I remember those bangs which started someway mid season from the onboards, yes, but I think this year they're even more pronounced. Or maybe it's just that unliftered fan shot video and audio that's playing tricks with me and it's been the same last year.

I think they're just going next level with whatever it is they are doing. There's a few videos online from testing where it sounds like this. New engine must have a few new tricks!

Those bangs are usually misfires in regular cars. They can be used to spool the turbo.

The regulations say no variable valve timing or lift systems. But how hard would it be to police such a thing if teams used hydraulic valve lifters to control valve lash? Then you could keep intake or exhaust valves open. Variable Miller cycle.

The free sample looks to cover the engine development through 2019?

Are there any forum users who have reversed engineered photos of any stage of this motors development?
Pretty please share a screen capture?

Actually, when I heard it first my first thought was it sounds like the Falcon Heavy launch in slow-mo.
Listen to Tim Dodds vids
(Not suggesting they have rocket assisted or pulse jet though)

Honda is playing with mapping I think. The AT01 is doing short runs of 5-7 laps without that bangs on it, and the RB is keeping that map ON

Same sort of bangs that McLaren had.
The other engines have these bangs too but in a different frequency. I could hear bangs from the Mercedes on the downshift last year when I was listenitng on a different device ( mobile with a different set of ear buds).

There is a research area on combustion stability on closing of direct injectors. Honda is probably doing something like mini-injector squirts to stabilize the combustion on quick downshifts. Costs maybe a little bit extra fuel but it pays back since the MGUH should spin up easier... I dunno.

Is it possible to burn air fuel mix in the exhaust without spark plug ? When they work with jet department, to me, it looks possible. If there is enough heat in the exhaust they just need to send air fuel mixture to there without combusting it in the the cylinder. May be one time in a few cycle. This also increase heat out there.
