Disappointing Mclaren are two tenth behind and Renault didn't improve their power so basically they are level with Redbull.
Verstappen barely went faster than last year, really no change. Incredible how a year of development yields identical lap times, on identical tires in cars that have the same regulations. What happened? How did they stand still, all the changes and developments did nothing! Crazy.
Honda.

FIA engine restrictions prolly also caught them out. Not as much as Ferrari, but...
Just to underline that assumption:
Gains/losses for Austria qualifying vs 2019 times:

Racing Point -0.921
Williams -0.737
Renault -0.493
McLaren -0.473
AlphaTauri -0.360
Mercedes -0.323s
Red Bull +0.038
Haas +0.619
Ferrari +0.920
Alfa Romeo +1.119

Max lost around 3 tenths in sector 3, was already down 2 tenths after sector 2. Max starting on mediums should make his first stint much longer seeing that the softs drop pace after a few laps.

Didn't everyone know about Fia restrictions last year or has they been something new lately. Honda was rumored to have found substantial horsepower during winter

A bit disapointed... But at least the race pace of the RB is better than quali. Will be interesting tomorrow starting with medium compound

Guess the honda spec 1.1 is still not much faster than last years Renault engine. Kidding, traction off corners is just not good. Mclaren had a great rear end grip and this year they have improved it.
Too bad Max is going to get mugged by Lando in the start.

I feel like Redbull still haven't fully optimized their upgrades yet. They did bring big upgrades to this race all at once with limited testing, I feel like next week we will see a better representation of what the package can do. But still Mercedes might be a bit too strong to catch right now.

Dont think the engine is slower this year, considering that AT improved. The combination of lower track temps and Max breaking parts probably explains more.

I disagree. Either quali mode is indeed not on par with last year (much more likely looking at long run pace), or (which would be even worse in terms of race pace) they again built a dog in early season.

Frankly I think he made a mistake, it's easy to lose tons of time in sector 3. I honestly don't see it as RB being over .5 seconds behind. With a good lap I'd say the gap is just over .2

Lower track temp actually favours increase in laptime. Max got the new wing from Alex so he does not have an excuse. He had two good runs in Q3 and was a tenth ahead of Lando. The car isn't there and the Honda gains are not as great as some would have let you believe.

It's hard to admit that Red Bull have ended up with egg on their faces after months of hype isn't it?

Yes, but Hamilton was also on pace to beat Bottas, so the gap could have been even higher

Last year Rbr Honda split the Mercedes before big upgrades in japan.maybe Das give Mercedes something that we haven't yet figured. It was Mercedes and Ferrari who predominantly into oil burning.merc now has straight line speed that matches Racing point
