Mercedes W12

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

A quick question here; are we actually sure there is a vortex along the floor's outer edge, and would it indeed be counterclockwise as illustrated? I was under the impression that if there was indeed a vortex, it would be clockwise, to draw air out and away from the floor's outer portion so to speak.

The vortex shown in that image is the wrong way round. The vortex generators would create a clockwise vortex on this side of the car.
^^ This. Also I think the discontinuity in the floor edge is designed to shed the edge vortex outboard of the rear floor.
The edge "diffuser" will itself generate a vortex, won't it? The triple fin VG will add a similar vortex so enhancing the vortex that flows from this area.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Thanks guys for confirming. Best to stop disinformation in it's tracks when you see it :) No offense to Zibby of course. I know there are different schools of thought regarding this topic.

I don’t understand? I’m not the one who illustrated the Aston Martin floor pics lol.

I was just sharing the pictures as an example of what a ‘21 floor looks like. So, yeah, not sure why I would be offended as I had absolutely nothing to do with the discussion you’re having above.

Sealing the diffuser is technically not what the floor edge slots did, more managing the tyre squirt. Sealing can only be done with a skirt. That said inducing a vortex at the edge of the floor I can only see making the diffuser performance worse - you'd be rotating the flow under the car and raising the pressure under the car.
I didn’t illustrate this drawing.

The photos were an example of what furniture is allowed on a ‘21 floor.

The photos were illustrated by @NicolasF1i

No worries. I was just confused when you mentioned my name randomly, as I had nothing to do with illustrating the diagram you had a question about, nor was my posting of the pictures an endorsement of anyone else's interpretation.

Wow... I wonder if other teams would come up with a similar floor solution. Also, funny thing, I was just watching lasagna recipes before going back to this thread... now all I see in that floor is lasagna edges. :D
