Correct, they put on more DF for the race also keeping in mind the high percentage of the chance of rain - this is what both Binotto and Leclerc told Sky F1 Italy. So if it wasn't for the very unfortunate red flag, it would have been the perfect strategy. One cannot say that McLaren didn't follow the same idea but you can't say the Ferrari PU is inferior to Merc just because Leclerc couldn't pass Lando on the straights.
Both mercedes and mclaren ran full wings as well, same as Ferrari. Ferrari pu is still atleast 20 hp behind im afraid
It’s not like “if all teams put on the biggest wing the downforce is the same for everyone”.
Top speed is much much more dictated by drag of the car than plain horsepower.
After the race Leclerc even told they had gambled on more DF than planned before and they knew they would be vulnerable on the straights.
It did help them the first part of the race and without the red flag I think it would have paid off with 3rd place.
Wait, I agree they might not have the same df levels, but if they have similar wings, dont they have similar drag as well? At that point, speed does depend on the engine.
Also overall throughout the race, the Ferraris looked nowhere like an attacking car dude. They looked like a proper 'pace' car, but not an attacking car. Leclerc even had a better pace than norris at the end but just couldn't get the move done.
