I feel the new suspension setup is good heating tires but... When we head to european summer, I have fears that will be a problem on the long runs...

Don’t worry. It isn’t a given at all Merc is actually better in wear.

In fact, look at the youtube from Portugal last year. The RB16 took ages to get heat into the tires. I am sure they can do quite a lot with set-up. It’s just 2 races in with one under very difficult conditions and in most stints incomparable situations, backmarkers and all.

Red Bull Powertrains Appoints Ben Hodgkinson As Technical Director

Red Bull Powertrains is delighted to confirm the appointment of Ben Hodgkinson as Technical Director.

Christian Horner OBE

In the early stages of his career, Ben spent several years developing race engines for the World Rally Championship and designing turbo charged Le Mans engines before joining Ilmor Racing engines, now known as Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains. Putting the powertrain division in campus along with the wind tunnel is a pretty nice chess move. Looks like RBR has restructured itself intelligently with regards to the budget cap. While the actual power unit may not change drastically, the installation can always improve.

That is going to hurt at Mercedes...

Honda's themself already hurting Merc and on the contrary of what they say now ( those "we are excited to competition" lie) I think they will cry more after every race they realise RBR Honda is going to be WDC/WCC.

It is a symptom of intellectual mediocracy that you get derated if you post a comment that a Merc-fan just does not like... I added one even though I disagree.

I think it is a bit early for your remark. It will be interesting to see if the flaw in the Merc is of a structural character or if something else got messed up, like the correlation at RB last year. If it is structural, RB will continue to develop their car whereas Merc will be locked in by their limitations. If not, it will be an exciting year.

Did Ben go straight to Red Bull after leaving Mercedes? Surely a person with a high role like that would have some kind of non-compete agreement with Mercedes, that prevents him from doing that?

So they poached a Mercedes HPP man. The head of engineering at that! Smart move.

The wind tunnel is not in MK but in Bedford!

He can't join before 2022 end.

I don’t think anyone actually believes Mercedes when they say things like “we want real competition”.

That’s just good PR talk, nothing more.

Mercedes would obviously far rather have a car as dominant as 2016 every season, rather than be in a situation where the car is equal to Red Bull and there’s a 50% chance of losing the title.
