I looked at Fernando's fastest lap in FP2 and S1 was at least 2.5 tenths slower than his fastest S1 of FP2. Also it was the 6th lap on the softs. So there is a lot more time to be had.

yes. Alonso gone in q3 and Ocon in Q2.

Now I really doubt the Alonso's progress. Very difficult for him to survive in F1

Negative surprise today, no doubts about that. However, Ricciardo is still struggling in Mclaren too, compared to Norris and I highly doubt he suddenly forgot how to drive. Spaniard has shown great performance in Portimao race, but he really lacks consistency atm. Struggles with tyres maybe?

there is a pattern. across all practice session it looks like Alonso is coming to the terms of car and getting an upper hand on ocon then comes quali and ocon thrashes him. luckily ricciardo is also struggling else it would have been very difficult to justify his struggles.

Alonso will start to shine on the second round of the year from August as much as the car allows him.

Disappointing qualifying, even for Ocon...

I understand that a team like Alpine tries to focus (aero) development on next year, but I wouldn't be optimistic about next years chances when you are not competitive on a track where aero efficiency is not so important. Alpine could end up having amazing downforce and power next year, but still be stuck in the midfield because the car does not handle properly...

Fortunately, they can still use this year to improve handling and driveablity.

Car didn’t seem to like mediums very much. Alonso started on mediums and he was ok for the first 10/15 laps always keeping within a second of Ric but then the pace dropped off a cliff.. Ocon started on Softs and had good pace then went onto Mediums and he dropped off a cliff even faster. Alonso did the opposite and went onto softs and slowly built them up until he was taking 2/3 seconds per lap out of Ocon/Gio/Kimi/Ric and finished on there gear box. Strange race

Major suspension reg changes next year too.

What I heard though was that they were having understeer issues. I don't think that is a lack of DF... typically means if they increase DF, they go into oversteer. So they can't get dialed in, can't find the middle ground.
