Mercedes W13

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

It seems more like squatting than porpoising.

Is there a CFD underway at all? I know you came under some heat with the last Merc one but I can say the majority of us massively appreciated your work you posted to the forum.
Thanks, but not this time. Design is too complex to model. I'd say this time the sidepod drag is truly minimal , but if there was any kind of minimal rear tyre flow conditioning before, now there isn't... :)

And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Where are the doubters now?
They were really hard at work over the 2021 year.
As much as the body work looks radical, this design can be copied by all of the teams. :)
But it is a nice head start. That floor will be sucked to the ground now with that downwash from the front of the sidepods creating an air curtain.
Will the suspension work with this kind of downforce though? more porpoising?!

I like it. A lot to look at and digest.

The new sidepods explains why the front wings were so agressive. The inlet of the sidepods have a clear view of the lower part of the front wing profile. The more aggressive part's downstream flow will go to the out part of the sidepod.
But also the size of the wing gives an idea of how much downforce is being balanced in the body!

This is Russel vs Hamilton this year! Russel deserves an oscar for the act he was putting on about Ferrari and Mclaren.
Sorry, but the doubters were right...there still are sidepods! Even if they changed massively, but there still are sidepods.

Very interesting design, let´s see how it works, but there are still sidepods, which has sense. I think there is a lot of psychological war when rumors come from Mercedes.

Has anyone posted this video of the W13's unstable behaviour at speed yet? It is dramatic compared to other cars at this test so far

Hm, inlet seems even bigger than some other teams.

it really is the same inlet size as before this change, they rotated the sidepod 90 degrees and repackaged the radiators probably. Alpha Tauri and Aston Martin to me have the smallest inlets.

Will be nice to see how this concept works on track. Nice variability in the field.

Apparently this behaviour is even somewhat visible in the pitlane but haven't verified myself
Seems even worse than Barcelona. Also W13 is the only car that still suffers from porpoising so far.

Does not really look like that....car behaved terrible in its first try. Porpoising like hell. McLaren, Red Bull and especially Ferrari are looking strong. I still think Ferrari is ahead. If you watch the teams in Bahrain, they all run a stiff suspension set-up now. Something Ferrari did from the very first minute in Barcelona already...

7 laps On hard's with a massive arrow rake on the front is hardly representative.
