New BMW engine systems

Post

BMW is busy to make their engines even more powerful and less thirsty. Therefore a new 6 in-line engine was developed with direct fuel injection. However there is a lot more, with electric water pump, regenerative braking, ... and all this to be in the new BMW3 series ;)

Interesting. This reminds me that the engine closer to the V12 optimum balance is a 6 in-line.

Oh, man, how I miss my classy, old 1971 Dodge Dart ... That engine lasted almost 25 years before the crappy chassis gave way. Actually, I sold the engine and cried a little.

Interesting that BMW have choosen to fire the fuel downwards at the piston rather than upwards at the exhaust valves like many of the other manufacturers.

V8 180° is not bad either. Maybe the problem would be the irregular torque during the cycle (mainly with no load), easily solved with a large flywheel.

V6 60° has no problem with the torque (one side "kills" the irregularities of the other side), but the balance is not very good. Something between a V6 60° and a in-line 6 would be a good compromise, don't you think?

Who fires it at the exhaust valve?

I though Audi had theirs setup like BMW.

Inline six is a very balanced engine and does not suffer from harmonic vibrations like other engine designs. Unfortunately, many manufactures like the V6 because the engine package can be made smaller. I like that BMW have kept the I6 going for so long. They've kept it at an angle too, so it can fit with a lower hoodline. They are probably the last manufacturer developing the I6.
I love to love Senna.

Sorry guys I was wrong none of the new Direct Injection engines fire fuel at the exhaust valve. The early systems did to help vapourise the fuel and cool the exhaust valve(s). However the new versions use it to generate a stratisfied mixture to run effectively in lean burn conditions in a small area of the combustion chamber, usually in the piston crown, which requires overhead injection.

Found this nice animation though 8)

Does anyone know how I could turn it into an Avitar :?: Perhaps Ciro Pabón can help me :?:

Slightly off-topic...an in-depth look at the M5:

There was a similar article, also 5 pages in length, about the M5 engine. Now, for some reason, I can't find it.
