Well it's vastly more difficult with manual transmission and 3 pedals, since you then need an ability to switch from left foot to right foot during a braking event in case the clutch is needed e.g. downshift, without changing brake pressure too much

Bit didnt you have to use clutch at starts and downshifts back then? They used H-pattern gearboxes.

Ayrton not only used the right foot for normal braking but he blipped both gas and brake to control the rear of the car in corner entry. I don't know if he did it Always as you ask though.
I think only Max & Leclerc do that where for Leclerc im certain that he does the blipping even though i don't know if he does it like Senna.

Either way see here an example of Senna doing exactly that with a road car in an exhibition run. Unfortunately there is no video of him doing it in an F1 car but it's a common knowledge.

Is that what people mean when they talk about "heel and toe"?

Yes and basically it's a rally thing mainly but some masters use it in F1 also.

In that era 1990 -1993 cars were just converting from clutch/H-shifter to automated paddle shifters. So allot of drivers were still used to right foot braking and not all of them were immediately changing over to left foot braking. I remember Coulthard was one of the younger generation, adopting left foot pretty earlry.

This is just how you drive a manual transmission car, racing or not. Senna came from an era where at least half his career was with manual h pattern boxes with no autoblip. You rev match your shifts on the way down to make a seamless transition for the driveline and rear wheels (grip). Until autoblip features, this is how anyone racing a car from weekend warriors to F1 drivers did it:

A lot of drivers, myself included because I had some kart background would use left foot braking when you didn’t have to shift, but switch to right foot on corners where you had to downshift. A lot of people in motorsports do it this way, amatuers including.

I still do it on the street. Just easier on the driveline.
