In America we have a National do-not-call registry. Once you sign up for it, most telemarketing calls are banned. :D

That do no call registry was voted down by the supreme court because it would mean lost of thousands of jobs in the U.S hence unconstitutional.
Simon: Nils? You can close in now. Nils?
John McClane: [on the guard's phone] Attention! Attention! Nils is dead! I repeat, Nils is dead, ----head. So's his pal, and those four guys from the East German All-Stars, your boys at the bank? They're gonna be a little late.
Simon: [on the phone] John... in the back of the truck you're driving, there's $13 billon dollars worth in gold bullion. I wonder would a deal be out of the question?
John McClane: [on the phone] Yeah, I got a deal for you. Come out from that rock you're hiding under, and I'll drive this truck up your ass.

Hello Mr. Canadian.

I live here. I signed up for it. The calls stopped. The website to register is still up. look for it on Google.

P.S. I like Canada. I love The Kids in the Hall. But living in this country puts me in a somewhat better position to speak of its laws--even if only by osmosis. I just don't want you to take my reply as a "--- Canada" post. I'm here to make friends. 8)

You're right...to a certain extent. While the DNC is in effect, it is not 100% effective. You may still, and will, get phone calls from the companies you deal with - you cable, internet, cell-phone providers, your banks, department stores, etc., etc.

Unfortunately, these are the people I get phone calls from...so the DNC doesn't really work. Also, you can still get phone calls from charities, political organizations, etc.

M3lover, we have the same thing in Canada. Same rules, same everything.

The best solution is to ask the company calling you to stop with the soliciting phone calls. I remember once I snapped at Rogers for calling to offer me more services (despite the fact that I had my cell, internet and TV through them - just shy of $200/month). I guess they were not happy with that much money, and I told them that if I get one more call, I will start canceling services. The guy on the other end said that there is not reason to get angry, that he will just put me on the DNC list. I guess I must've gotten through to them since they never called again.

Yeah, I know there are exeptions like the ones you mentioned, but I would still rate the law as pretty effective in many cases. The amount of calls reduced seems to vary by person, and I've been pretty lucky, as I've had nobody calling me unwanted period since I signed up.
