McLaren MCL36

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Well. The ends of the lower contral arms could be stacked onto one stub and it not be multi-link any more... We would have to see the Wheel hub to confirm.
It would still be multilink no matter what. The centers of the spherical bearings are offset in space.
Look carefully and you see that the rear arm has a cup shape at the end where it seems the bearing of the leading arm sits into it. Could be effectively functioning like one A-arm.

If these two arms were meant to bolt together like "one A-arm", they would have instead made a single piece ( > ) wishbone for the lower control arm because that would have only required 1 bearing and would therefore be consequentially lighter. This happens to be exactly what they have done for the upper control arm. If there are two separate bearings/links, it's because they mount in different places to create a virtual endpoint for the kingpin axis.

The "cup shape" thing is a spherical bearing.

So what I can interpret from this is, the silicone was used to absorb the heat that was leaking from the sides, this solution shrouds that area to reduce or stop leakage into the cake tins, anyway that's a pretty significant alteration.
That's standard High temp RTV. I'd suspect with the amount on messing around they were doing with the brakes the normal gaskets were stuffed so they were just slathering on RTV to try and keep it sealed as best as possible to get through testing.

Nice view from within the MCL36

Driver's helmet camera is a great thing and more of this should be done. That view shows that the mirrors are actually pretty useful and a driver can definitely see a car directly behind him and behind either side of his rear wheels.

Is this from observations on the car or from sources within the team? I'm wondering if it rules out new parts appearing for FP2?

I kind of expected a little more in terms of updates from this race, but perhaps the brake duct issue stunted that a little.

There is a "show and tell" obligation for teams to announce upgrades/changes before the weekend starts, so it's all official now
