This is a bit off topic but it's just incredible to think about how well Red Bull nailed last year's car. From the lack of porpoising to the perfect sidepod concept to the weird floor and also whatever trick earned them their unbelievable top speed. It's as though they had a 2 year head start working on the rules. Doesn't make all that much sense to me how they nailed it so well when they were busy with the 2021 title fight.

I don't think there's foul play at hand. Just they nailed the regulations pretty solidly, Ferrari's misfortunes and countless mistakes, and finally TD39 allowed them to shift focus to 2023 quite early as well.

Hello, been a long time since we last saw each other :).

I figure I'd drop some data about the session, nothing much though.

SAI v VER fastest laps (hard to compare given how far apart they were set):

it's day 1 of testing so not really much to comment.

* Ferrari doesn't seem to have much of a speed issue this year although they are using a less loaded rear wing so it's pretty clear they should be faster.
* VER lap seemed pretty clean overall, somehow pays a bunch in the last straight for speed but he's on full throttle earlier, probably a sign of the more loaded rear wing.
* IMHO the less loaded rear wing, and what felt like a very stiff setup, makes Ferrari pay during slow corners like T1, T4, T14-15
* Lots of other small errors in both SAI and LEC laps, car isn't stable

I don't think anyone did race sims judging by the laptimes.

Also I've not watched the thing in full, this is by no means "the truth" just my interpretation of the parts that I saw, correct it at will.

The F1-75 was a faster car on raw pace. It had inferior race pace and inferior top-speed to RB18. Of course this got only worse for them throughout the season when several things came into play - such as the TD39, PU reliability issues (and consequently being in lower mode) and stopping the development quite early. But altogether at the beginning of the season the F1-75 had more downforce, was more stable and was fast in all conditions and on all tyres - an Allrounder.

Considering this, I don’t see why the RB18 should be praised to heaven in comparison to the F1-75. Rather than calling the RB18 incredible, I’d call the overall package consisting of car, driver, team, strategy etc. incredible. Because that’s - coupled with Ferrari’s own induced misery - was what gave them 17 wins.

Yep, thats what it looks like. He's been moved back to the factory, replaced on the pit wall by Ravin Jain. He's an Oxford physics graduate who joined Ferrari back in 2016. Hopefully he's a decent upgrade.

Couple more graph just for giggles, this is FP1 Bahrain 2022 from LEC vs today, FP1 time was 1s slower than today:

This is FP2 vs today, FP2 time was 1.2s faster than today:

Couple of notes:
* SF-23 in some corners brakes a LOT later than F1-75, in some cases 20+m later according to this data (comp laps are 1s faster and 1s slower but it's still later braking from higher speed).
* Most corners are rounder, taken less aggressively and LEC has to be (or just is) slower with the throttle.
* Despite the slower corner speed, SF-23 seems to catch up F1-75 speed before the end of the straight at worst, by mid straight at best.
* Upshifts are slower in SF-23 so either they lenghtened their ratios, IMHO unlikely looking the graphs against VER, or they could push the car more there.

I think the car looks genuinely improved from last year except for the balance, which at the moment has oversteer both in slow speed and high speed corners while RBR seems to only oversteer in exit of slow speed corners.

Incredible to me is that Ferrari has the mid-low downforce wing on for this test, while they ran a mid-high spec for the race last year - so the fact that they’re able to break later, and even maintain a higher minimum apex speed in several corners, is very impressive. Certainly suggests strong downforce and also improved mechanical grip.

Feels like due to aero development Ferrari has had to baseline and validate correlation data which they did yesterday and will actually start tuning setup from today. Bottoming on straights could also be due to very high down force. Matching RB top speed is encouraging.
