Any kind of top 10 finish on merit would be a huge improvement on their form.
Newey may be focused on 2026, but there's no way he wasn't at least being consulted on their upgrade direction. It's just impossible to believe that Aston having their first successful upgrade package in basically years after Newey joins is just a pure coincidence.
If we're being honest, it most likely would have been another Q2 exit for Aston Martin without the medium tyre strategy.
Nah, they were legitimately fast even on the C6. The medium gave them the edge to perhaps gain a few extra spots in Q3, but the difference was probably only a tenth and a half, two tenths at most. It wasn't a huge advantage.
They were only in Q1 fast on the C6. The picture is always a bit misleading because many others used a worn set in the 2nd attempt of Q1 (AMR used a new C6 set), or the first try in Q2. AMR used a new set C6, many opponents around (not the top teams) a used set. Neither ALO nor STR were able to drive a 15.5 with the C6 (ALB P10 in Q2). They are not that fast as it looks, but took advantage of the better medium, which gave them not only faster times, but also fresh tyres for all runs, beside STR 2nd try Q3.
Regarding Newey and the updates. This package was developed at a time a certain Newey wasn’t even employee of the company. Don’t know if the updates work that great, but credit to the guys who developed it. It was just mapped in the new tunnel at the time Newey was already around. But it’s neither correct nor right to say that Newey had his input on the development.
