Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

3 Renault PU failures yesterday... not really a good prospect and I thought they were working hard on the reliability.
To be fair to Renault. Max's problem has been linked to debris from other incidents restricting air flow and the fact he got too close to the back of perez just before his engine did blow.

Marko’s initial belief was that debris could have contributed to Verstappen’s failure but that was not the case:

Abiteboul said it was 0.2 seconds. Is this possible with a software update?
The "spark plugs" are free to change... so you know what that means..
They put in new spark plugs?
The TJI torch and all it nozzles and shrouding is the "spark plug" It has a strong effect on combustion. You can change it freely without changing engine. It is a loop hole.

Spark plugs, injectors and fuel rail ancillaries are all free to change anyway.

“There is still a big focus in trying to follow our road map and make sure that next year’s engine is there. And as it is an engine that is close to this one, it is easier to transfer ideas from one to the other.”
Two weeks ago Abiteboul said in 2018 Renault would be bring a complete new concept PU. :wtf:

Yes Renault pulled the same card last year. They change TJI nozzles.. And put it as a "spark plug" update... That spark plug change gave them a few more tenths of laptime. I can't remember the race when it happened. Either Monaco or the update after that.

I think it was in Singapore, but as far as I can remember RB didnt race them because driveability decreased.

Does anyone have info about engine rules at test.
As you know Redbull tested 2018 tires with 2017 car.
Can Redbull use new upgraded motor in this test? is it possible?

Don't see why not, a test isn't going to count towards their race engine allocation, and there's no more tokens to restrict development.

Incorrect, in this interview he states that the failure was oil-pressure related, it was not caused by debris. The debris flew away from VES his radiator already in lap 3. That's why they did not box him just like RIC.

They're not supposed to test new parts at Pirelli tests.

Hmmm. "It was a big piece of carbon fibre, but it blew away, unfortunately after three laps.”
UNFORTUNATELY sounds more like he is blaming debris. ??

Can you not join the dots. The oil pressure issue was most likely as a result of that debris for 3 laps. Regardless of if the debris cleared the damage was done during those 3 laps. Oil temperatures rose and Max didn't help the situation by sitting right up the rear end of perez immediately after and the engine heat from Perez drove the final nail into the coffin and then instead of coming into the pits immediately he did an extra lap for some reason.
