Is Alonso's announcement out yet? If he is waiting for Americans to wake up, it's almost certainly Indycar related...
If it relates to Indycar, I doubt it will be a full time drive. Motorsport.com would have been all over the speculation story by now. But you never know, I could be wrong.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

So, will they retain the Stoffelwaffle or will both seats be vacant? I'm thinking Sainz gets a seat with Gasly getting the promotion at RB.

He's not using the word retirement, rather that he won't race in F1 in 2019.

Most likely Sainz, Stoff and Lando will be the drivers for next year. Kind of sad to see a driver that neither RB or Renault wanted becoming the lead driver for Mclaren

And there goes my reason to stop watching Formula 1 at the end of this year.

These silly season threads are going to be about a quarter of the length without all the Alonso speculation!

He even hints in his statement that he would like to come back if the time is right, but lets face it. if he goes now it is not likely he will be coming back, is it?

What is going to change in his favour? I suppose if a big team joins thy may want a name with experience, but other than that his options will be the same as they were this year, he will be a year older and not driven for a year.
Never been an Alonso fan, but will miss him

I guess in theory if Mclaren suddenly starts challenging for podiums in the next 1-2 years he could come back. Or if he wins Indy and achieves the triple crown. But yes, unlikely...

If Mclaren are challenging for the steps, it would mean the drivers they have are doing a good job, and would be 15 years younger than Alonso, so why change them?

Interesting...Leigh Diffey implying on Twitter that Alonso already has a ride secured for next year (most likely Indy?)
