I know some people are saying that Alonso's arrival to McLaren brought almost instant speed to the car though his set-up work, all copied by Hamilton, which was partly what pissed Alonso off later on?
I think it's also the relationship that the driver has with his race engineer and their understanding of the car that makes a difference as well. The engineers have to interpret what the driver is saying in terms of feedback and make changes to the car accordingly.
An example of this was MS complaining to his race engineer (Pat Symonds) of oversteer in a particular fast corner. Pat suggested to MS that after looking at the data and knowing the car he should stiffen the rear end, when logic would suggest just the exact opposite. Michael apparently was very sceptical but went along with it.
MS went out again and didn’t suffer oversteer (due to the bump rubber) in that corner again.
