McLaren MCL33

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I know. The fact that they're effectively using a smaller lever lenght for the pullrod to act on, as well as the awkard angle at which it sits probably mean that a lot of force has to go through that rod to make the suspension work, and it almost certainly makes them lose on mechanical grip. But everything is a matter of compromise, and they think they can outweigh the loss in mechanical grip with the added aero grip from the "cleaner" suspension setup providing better flow to the rear. Perhaps it works as intended, perhaps it's ---, none of us know.

All I'm saying is: it's stupid to assume that their suspension is to blame for their poor performances with not one of us having information to back that up.

Oh definately, they'll have run the figures and decided the aero gain at most tracks is worth the mechanical compromise at others. But it's definately more of a mechanical compromise than anyone else so far.

Such a different approach from the other teams. No heat exchangers or ducts other than the snorkel above the top of the fuel tank/monocoque. I speculate this was at least partly about managing the overall vehicle CoG height changes imposed by the halo structure.

Oddly, it doesn't seem to have hurt everyone else that badly (halo cog).

I think its left overs from honda packaging. The Honda pu had a ton of stuff up there. So your left with a void up there. They probably didn't have time to move stuff up there. We'll see if that changes next year.

well they are having issues with low speed traction according to them.

i wold guess the change in suspension is what caused it since last year it looked ok.

New front wing without the edge vortex tunnels on the car this morning.

Pretty sure they tried something like this in the latter part of 2016.

Looks like they are trying to figure out how to tackle next year's regulations.

Exactly, that’s what I thought moments after posting. Maybe they’ll also bring some new bargeboards to test in the coming races to reflect the TR changes next year considering their importance in redirecting the front tyre wake away from the rest of the car will significantly increase due to the lack of outwash front wings.
