This explains the Mercedes situation then.

Hamilton should be strong tomorrow but I think he’s a bit too far back to make much progress.
Based on pre-season testing, Ferrari and RBR will be very strong in race trim. I think the race will be between Ferrari and RBR. Perhaps Charles, Max, and Carlos will be on podium tomorrow.

With LH leaving for Ferrari and GR qualifying ahead of LH, will Merc prioritize GR's race strategy?
well it depends, if Russell has good pace to keep up with the Ferraris and co. and Lewis cant make his way through the field, Merc will most likely prioritize Russell to secure a podium but it would have nothing to do with Lewis leaving for Ferrari next year.

you all are forgetting Alonso. his strength is race craft. he is gonna be on podium for sure
Last year, AMR qualified in P5 and P8, this year, its P6 and P12. Considering the gap between Stroll and Alonso, I would say that Alonso has already given everything possible on a clear track during Q3.

Podium is possible for Alonso, but it will take more than a normal race to beat the Ferraris and RBR in race trim.

With these quali times, race launch is going to be a MASSIVE differentiator. Do we know who may be strong in that area?

We could actually see them go 5-6 wide into the braking for turn 1 with how close they are.

This looks like the best setup that ive seen in F1 to have 30 overtakes in the first 10 laps.

If 2024 converges further, they need to just freeze the Formula.
Yeah and change the name to formula subzero…

All first sector.
Is it me or does RB/Max have way better traction out of corners?
I can't really see that Leclerc made a mistake in T1-T3. It's just slower than Verstappen.
Verstappen goes wider out of T1 and still manages to lift less into 2-3, usually the guy who keeps it tighter has a better run.
Ferrari losing in S1 has been a constant all weekend, not just in qualy.

Don't really understand why since in the other slow corners he's essentially a match to Verstappen.

So it looks like everyone set up for qualifying but Mercedes setup for the race.

I don't like how they make it seem like no one else focuses on the race.
Just one more year, 2025 it will be Ferrari getting these headlines

Man. It would really suck to have 10 different bespoke prototypes all running within .01s of each other and costing nearly zero to upgrade for 2-3 seasons wouldn't it?🙄

We might just get the best racing of all time, but WTF? Right?

I think it will be difficult for Max this evening as he looks to have taken too much wing off the car.

Max seems to have lost 0.5 sec in the 2nd and 3rd sectors, which is huge. With DRS from the 2nd lap onwards, it is going to be difficult for him to get away and easier for Ferrari and Merc to attack Max. Max going to cook his tyres like he did in Las Vegas last year.

A nice close quali, now to wait and see if RBR still have a superior race pace or not, looking forward to the race

All of this would have gone unsaid if it was Hamilton at P3. If Hamilton was in P3, everyone would be upbeat about Mercedes and the car. But when its George Russell, it just doesn't count. It certainly doesn't surprise me to see George up in P3.

The lack of respect for George is just breathtaking. He was the least picked driver in F1 Fantasy as well. Comes with the territory of being Hamilton's teammate I guess.

today it's not the rules to blame though, but the team. There was no need at all to go for a 2nd run in Q1
Charles even said that...
Charles will always happily blame the team for his own under performance. Sainz showed the car had 1:29.9 in it on the first run on softs in Q1.They wouldn't have put Charles on new tires if he set a little bit better lap.
Hamilton always happily blames alternate setups for his own under performance. So its not like Leclerc is the only one that plays the blame game.

Yuki outperformed Daniel in the first quali of the year. It seems, Yuki is going to save Perez's seat at RB.
Its just one race but the first gauntlet has been thrown.

Red Bull will be in an awkward situation if Perez struggles like he did last year while Yuki beats Riccardo. Then what. They wont put Yuki in the Red Bull.

Sainz and Hulkenberg are both free agents.

Yeah I mean mid season. If Perez is missing out on Q3 a few races in and just doesn't have it.

Front wing flaps can be changed between Q and race, right ? Also, from pics in car comparison thread, Redbull has the most aggressive rear wing of all.
What I reckon is going to be interesting, is how the fuel laden cars are going to behave coming out of T11 into T12 onto T13. What I saw from onboards, during testing as well as during fuel runs in the FPs, is that only RedBull is going full throttle through T12, others are having to lift.

No changing wing angles is forbidden in parc ferme
